MediaTek Dimensity 9600 Pro: 2nm, On-Device AI and What Buyers Should Know
MediaTek launched the Dimensity 9600 Pro on September 15, 2026. It is a flagship smartphone SoC built on a 2nm process and designed around higher performance, power efficiency and on-device AI workloads.
The chip combines an all-big-core CPU, dual-NPU architecture and AI-focused CPU/GPU/ISP integration. The practical question for buyers is not simply whether the processor is powerful, but how phone manufacturers use those capabilities in cooling, battery life, cameras, gaming and software.
What Is the Dimensity 9600 Pro?
The Dimensity 9600 Pro is MediaTek’s latest flagship 5G smartphone SoC.
Its major change is the move to TSMC’s 2nm process, alongside an all-big-core CPU design and a new AI architecture.
MediaTek says the platform combines CPU, GPU, NPU and ISP capabilities through what it calls its Native AI Architecture. The objective is to allow different parts of the chip to work together for AI workloads instead of treating AI as a separate processing task. MediaTek
2nm Manufacturing: Why It Matters
Moving to a smaller manufacturing process can allow chip designers to increase transistor density while targeting improvements in performance and power efficiency.
MediaTek previously worked with TSMC on its 2nm technology and said the enhanced N2P process could provide up to an 18% performance improvement at the same power, approximately 36% lower power at the same performance and a 1.2x increase in logic density compared with N3E. MediaTek
The Dimensity 9600 Pro itself uses the first-generation TSMC 2nm process rather than the later N2P variant. TSMC says its N2 technology entered volume production in the fourth quarter of 2025. TSMC
This distinction is important because the 2nm label alone does not determine a smartphone’s real-world battery life or performance. The final result also depends on the chip architecture, cooling system, software and the phone manufacturer’s implementation.
New 2+3+3 All-Big-Core CPU
The Dimensity 9600 Pro uses a 2+3+3 CPU configuration.
According to MediaTek’s specifications, the design includes:
- 2 Arm C2-Ultra cores at up to 4.55GHz
- 3 Arm C2-Pro cores at up to 4.35GHz
- 3 Arm C2-Pro cores at up to 3.1GHz
MediaTek reports up to 17% faster single-core performance and 15% faster multi-core performance, alongside claimed improvements in power efficiency. These are vendor-reported comparisons, so they should not be treated as independent benchmark results.
This design is different from the traditional approach of combining a few high-performance cores with several efficiency-focused cores. MediaTek is instead using all-big-core processing to target demanding workloads while relying on other architectural improvements for efficiency.
On-Device AI Is a Major Focus
AI is one of the biggest changes in the Dimensity 9600 Pro.
The chip includes MediaTek’s NPU 1090 together with its Super Efficient NPU architecture.
MediaTek says the platform delivers:
- 2x INT4 computing compared with the previous generation
- 55% greater token generation per watt
- 51% faster LLM prefill performance
- KV-cache compression
- support for Mixture-of-Experts models
- edge-training capabilities
- always-on AI processing
These capabilities are aimed at running more AI processing directly on smartphones rather than relying exclusively on cloud servers. MediaTek
For users, the practical impact will depend on how smartphone manufacturers and application developers use these capabilities.
AI Agents and Smartphone Workloads
MediaTek is also positioning the Dimensity 9600 Pro for agentic AI.
The idea is broader than asking a chatbot a question. AI agents can potentially perform multiple steps within an application or workflow, making sustained processing and power efficiency important.
MediaTek’s architecture includes a dedicated always-on domain intended to allow background AI activity while reducing its impact on battery consumption. MediaTek
However, the existence of an AI-capable chipset does not automatically mean every smartphone will provide advanced AI-agent features. Those capabilities depend on the phone manufacturer, operating system and applications.
Gaming and Graphics
The Dimensity 9600 Pro also targets flagship gaming.
MediaTek’s Neural Graphics Architecture combines GPU and NPU processing for AI-enhanced graphics, while the platform supports advanced ray tracing and high-resolution gaming workloads.
The chipset also supports LPDDR6 memory and UFS 5 storage technologies, giving manufacturers access to newer memory and storage standards for flagship devices. Gadgets 360
Actual gaming performance will still depend heavily on the smartphone’s cooling system, display resolution, software optimization and sustained power limits.
Camera and Imaging Capabilities
The Dimensity 9600 Pro integrates AI into the imaging pipeline as well.
MediaTek’s AI Imaging Fusion Architecture allows the image signal processor to work with NPU processing for photography and video workloads. MediaTek
This could help manufacturers implement features such as computational photography, scene recognition and AI-assisted image processing.
But camera quality cannot be determined from the chipset alone. Sensor selection, lenses, image-processing algorithms and camera software remain important factors.
Dimensity 9600M Expands the Platform
MediaTek also introduced the Dimensity 9600M alongside the Pro model.
The 9600M is positioned as a premium-tier platform and uses a different architecture, including an all-big-core CPU, NPU 990 and MediaTek’s AI and gaming technologies.
MediaTek lists support for features including Gemini Nano 4, Qwen 3.5 Omni 4B, Wi-Fi 7, UFS 4.1 and AI-enhanced connectivity. MediaTek
This gives MediaTek a broader Dimensity 9600 family rather than relying on a single flagship configuration.
What the 9600 Pro Changes in a Smartphone
The most important change is the amount of processing being designed around on-device AI. The Dimensity 9600 Pro combines CPU, GPU, NPU and ISP functions through MediaTek’s Native AI Architecture, while its dual-NPU design is intended to handle both demanding AI workloads and lower-power background processing.
That matters because AI features increasingly run locally for responsiveness, privacy and reduced dependence on cloud processing. However, the chip alone does not guarantee a particular AI experience. Manufacturers still decide which models, applications and system features are enabled on a finished phone.
For gaming and graphics, MediaTek also combines GPU and NPU processing and supports hardware ray tracing. Sustained results depend on the phone’s thermal design, power limits, display resolution and software optimization.
What Smartphone Buyers Should Look For
If you are considering a smartphone powered by the Dimensity 9600 Pro, look beyond the processor name.
Check:
- Cooling: Can the phone sustain performance during long gaming sessions?
- Battery: Does the device have enough capacity for its performance level?
- AI features: Which AI functions are actually available on the phone?
- Display: Does the phone pair the chipset with a high-quality display?
- Camera hardware: What sensors and lenses are being used?
- Software support: How long will the manufacturer provide updates?
- Storage and RAM: Does the configuration match your workload?
- Connectivity: Which 5G and Wi-Fi capabilities are supported?
This approach gives buyers a more realistic picture than comparing chipset names alone.
Bottom Line
The MediaTek Dimensity 9600 Pro brings a 2nm process, 2+3+3 all-big-core CPU, dual-NPU architecture and support for LPDDR6 and UFS 5.0 into MediaTek’s flagship smartphone platform. MediaTek reports gains in CPU performance and AI efficiency, but those figures are manufacturer claims rather than independent tests. MediaTek
For consumers, the finished phone matters as much as the SoC. Cooling, battery capacity, software support, camera hardware and the AI features actually enabled by the manufacturer will determine how much of the chipset’s potential users experience.
